India’s federal labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya has asked the chief minister of the southern state of Tamil Nadu to find a resolution to the ongoing strike by Samsung Electronics workers, a government source said on Wednesday.
A strike at the South Korean group’s plant near the city of Chennai has entered its third week, with more than 1,000 workers disrupting operations and demanding higher wages and union recognition at the plant.
The minister has urged the state government to intervene for an “early and amicable” resolution, the source said.
Samsung and the Tamil Nadu government did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.
Samsung has defended its wages, saying its workers at the Tamil Nadu plant are paid almost twice as much as employees in nearby companies.
The workers’ demonstrations are being carried out close to Samsung’s home appliances factory near Chennai since Sept 9.
